OK, I was planning a little hike on a fishing trip. What I got was a hiking trip with a little fishing. Either way, it was a beautiful day and a great way to spend time with my wife. Marcusn inspired me to go seek some smallies, so up Calif. Ave I went. A friend who lives up there pointed me in the right direction. Its a good thing he did. I would have stopped at the first stream thinking that was Kaukonahua Stream, but it is actually over another hill.
Here is the first hill we went down (and the last hill we had to get back up!)
We passed this nice little water fall along the way.
After about 30 minutes of hiking, this garden hose made it easy to get down to the water.
It didn't take long to find the smallies. This guy was pretty agressive. He got the tip of my Baby Brush Hog the first two times. Third time was the charm. It was fun getting him in on ultralite tackle and 4# test line!
He wasn't a 2#er but he's getting there!
Back he goes. By the time Stan gets here, he'll be well over 2 lbs.!
The water was higher than usual according to my friend, which made wading down the stream a little more difficult. I was OK with it, but the wife didn't care for a swim, although the water was clear and sparkling. A great way to spend quality time with the family, and do some fishing as well!

I was wondering about the leptospirosis but I'm thinking since we were so far up stream that only the clean, clear mountain water is flowing. I'll keep you posted if I come down with anything.
Marcusn, I'm down for a fishing partner, you just have to take it easy on me with the hiking. I'm turning into an old fart!

I think the small mouth jungle trips are awesome ! I hit both nuuanu and manoa streams and caught some fun smallies. Nothing big, but it sure is a fun way to spend an afternoon. The mosquitos were rough and manoa stream left us with a rash on our lower legs that took some cream from the doctor to get rid of. But who cares ! It wasn't lepto.........

The day I'm going to hike way back there...

I'm laughing with you Stan...not at you.
