The 2nd to last time I went fishing it rained pretty good and I got water in a bunch of my plano boxes and I didn't dry them out, which resulted in about 80 crankbaits with rusty hooks and o rings. I know I can replace the hooks and rings but that would be time consuming and probably expensive.
If I was to spray them down with some wd40 would it ruin the finishes on the lures?
You know, it seems crazy but I have have heard from multiple sources that wd40 works really well as a fish attractant. I even remember bill dance using it on his show when I was a little kid. But if it won't get rid of the problem then what's the point.
Most of them aren't too bad, nothing a little sharpening won't take care of. On a few the rust color transfered to a few spots on the paint.
When I first started writting I thought exactly what you said roadwarrior..and almost stopped writting but kept on figuring someone had to have tried this before.
After a day of salt water fishing I give all the lures a nice freshwater bath and then spray them with WD-40. The stuff attracts fish.
We forgot (or neglected) to dry out some freshwater lures and they turned the tackle box tray into a rusty mess. I removed the lures and sprayed the tray with WD-40, then wiped it out with paper towels.
I washed all the lures with tooth paste and a tooth brush. Some of the hooks were not rusted that bad so I just sharpened the points, and put them back in the tray. Some of the lures needed to have the hooks replaces. Sprayed everything with WD-40 and closed the tackle box.
I keep a can in the boat and in the tackle box.
(you can also buy it in gallon cans)
If it doesn't move and it's suppose to...
Use the WD-40.
If it moves and it's not suppose to...
Use the Duct Tape.

if its slight surface rust a few rubs with a hook sharpener will do fine,if its much more serious id just use it as an excuse to put a better treble on em and split rings are really cheap. dont have to do all 80 at one time, just do em as you use them. id also put the oval shaped o rings on the line ties, the newer cranks got em but man they really make tying line easier and the action better.
All the rattle traps I have(had), have the oval rings. When I took all my boxes out of my boat the other day..I didn't realize that my lipless crankbait box and soft jerkbait box didn't make it into the house until this morning. I grabbed the boxes out with the cover on the boat so I haven't gotten a good search yet but I think they were stolen. The last time I fished there were a whole bunch of kids about 12-14 years old at the ramp..asking to use my rods and stuff. I had to decline and went to back the trailer down. As I was comming down I see the group of kids riding off on their bikes(didn't think anything of it). Hopefully I stashed them in another compartment on accident because there are about 30 lipless cranks in that box..about $100 worth. Will have to perform a all out search for them tmw.
