I remember hanabata daze back in the early 1960s living just half a block away from the Ala Wai Canal on Pau street. Back then still had the Mullet fishermen's wooden platforms along the banks, and there was a boat rental below the McCully street bridge on a large floating dock where you could rent either an electric powered boat to cruise the canal or a little dinghy for about 1/3 the price. Me and my older siblings of course could only afford the row boat, and only a couple times at that.
We would also walk to Fort DeRussy beach just a few minutes away. Back then had the floating platforms with diving board off the beach. I think the Woolworth Building on Kalakaua Ave was one of the tallest in Waikiki.
Good old daze.
