Tenkara Line holder

Postby Stan Wright » Sun Feb 06, 2011 5:02 pm

The first time I saw one of those Swimming Pool Noodles
I started thinking "line holder".
They were on sale the last time I was in Wally World so
I got one. ($2 something)

I stopped by Brian's Fishing on the way home to talk story
and mentioned the Noodle. Brian said he was also thinking
about the same thing and said he was going to have to
get one. I handed mine over to him.

First he wrapped a length of masking tape around one end
to use as a guide for cutting.

Worked like a charm. A knife goes through that thing like it was hot butter.

Next he went over to the electric line winder and rigged the thing like a lathe...

Holding a small file against the spinning wheel of foam,
within seconds a grove appeared... perfect size for holding
a Tenkara line.

One inch was so wide I ask if he could make me one with
two groves... so I cold put 2 lines on one holder.

Five minutes later I had a whole pile of new line holders.
I know everyone doesn't have an electric line winding
machine or a lathe in their garage, but I bet I could figure
out something with an electric drill, or just play around with
a rat-tail file. Might not be as quick or as pretty, but I
think I could do it.

I like being able to stick the hook into the foam and then
wind on the line. I cut some slits along the outside to
secure the end of the line. (like on a spool of sewing thread)

Swimming Pool Noodles come in two sizes. I got the
big one... a little over 3 inches. There is one with a
smaller diameter... a little over 2 inches. I'll try that one next.
If I ever run out of line holders.
