Tenkara Question for Stan
Aloha Stan, I'm getting the Tenkara bug but want to catch more than the Tilapia behind my backyard BUT due to recent back surgery driving all the way to Lake Wilson from Kailua aggravates the injury. Have you ever tried Tenkara for Red Devils at Ho'omaluhia Pond, Kaneohe? What flies work best for them? Ever Tenkara a Smallmouth from there? Mahalo, Ji

Ji,
I was over behind the Creek Side Tavern and catching talipia there... the red devils wouldn't take my fly.
Ho'omaluhia is probably perfect for Tenkara. Only thing is the Red Devils, all those fish, are trained to eat bread... Clay calls them "Bread Devils.
I've fished a small streamer fly in the stream below the dam and caught several types of fish... there are RD and Smallmouth there. I bet the smallies would take a streamer fly, or Crazy Charlie (it looks like an opai)
Now if you had some small little fish or opai.........

"Why let the truth stand in the way of a good fish story?"
Thanks Stan. I do have a bunch of these epoxy minnow flies. I think my Crazy Charlies are a tad too big for Tenkara they being O'io size. I may have some Opae flies tied up, better double check.
I'm surprised those Red Devils in the canal can tolerate the brackish water so well. I kind of hope they multiply and spread to my section of the canal.
