Is this really that huge?

Postby Stan Wright » Tue Jul 27, 2010 12:30 pm

Have you seen the picture of the crab caught
on Molokai? Is it really that big... or photo shop? :o
Image

That was the question... here's what I think.
A simple law of Photography says...
"What ever is closest to the camera... looks the bigest".
When there is nothing in the picture that
you recognize to give you scale... the size is a guess.

That said... It's a great picture... I bet it's a
really big crab too. I don't think it's 4 feet from
claw to claw, but it's way bigger than anything
I would fool with. (check the size of the cooler
under the crab... maby it realy is....... )

This will give you an idea of what I mean by
holding a fish close to the camera to make it l
ook bigger.
When the fish is next to the guy and you
can see his hand you get an idea of the size.

Typical "fish picture".

Better fish picture... you don't have to look
at the camera to have a good fish picture.
Image

Holding the fish out from you toward the
camera makes it look bigger. But it also
makes the hand look bigger... you can tell
the fish is being held out to make it look bigger.
Image

By changing the way you hold the Boga Grip,
you can hide your hand behind the fish.
Image

Now that you don't have any thing in the
picture to give you an idea of how big the
fish really is... it's anyones guess.
Image

If you use a wide angle lens you can get even
closer to the fish.

So as you can see, it's not the size of the fish...
it's how good a photographer your fishing partner is.

Ho brah! Monstah red devil!

Yeah, Stan has some photog skills :D

It still looks like a big crab though...compared to the coolah...unless...it was a small coolah.

Many people said my carp looks double digit. That's a combination of holding the fish out and use a small guy in the picture to make the fish looks big
Caution - Objects in picture are smaller than they appear.

I am genetically predisposed to make fish look bigger than they really are.
