Barracuda fishing in ALA WAI

Postby tkpeltier » Tue Aug 04, 2009 1:51 pm

Does anyone know where the gentlemen in the photo gallery catching Barracuda near Waikiki are fishing? Is it the Ala Wai Canal? Is this still accessible by a small boat? It looks like a lot of fun and I would like to try it if anyone can help me out with some info on where to launch, etc.. Thanks, Tristan

I fish it sometimes, since I work in Waikiki. A boat is good, but not required. Just remember to add a short steel leader if you are using a small lure.

You can launch your boat behind the Ilikai Hotel at the public ramp.
Plenty of free boat trailer parking.

Everyone asks: "You don't eat the fish do you?"
NO, that's why there are so many fish there...
it's so polluted even the locals are afraid to eat them.

Use light tackle... 2#, 4#, or 6# test. The largest we've
ever caught was around 2 pounds...most are smaller, but lots of fun.

You might also get into the Papio because there are
choke Oama around now. See Clays Blog.

Any top water, or minnow type lure, or spoon works fine.
Remember that short wire leader.
Bend the barb down on the hooks so the fish are easier to release.
And beware of those razor sharp teeth.
We use a Boga-Grip and "looooong nose pliers.

Here is a shot of Clay "The White Ninja" with a double we caught near the golf course.
