Free Fly Rod

Postby Ahnkochee » Sat Mar 07, 2009 3:35 pm

Went to the "Great Guns" gun show at the Blaisdell Center today and on visiting the "Trouts Unlimited" table they had an offer I couldn't refuse: Join Trouts Unlimited Hawaii Chapter today and receive a free new Scientific Anglers 9' 10 weight fly rod. I was going to join anyways so the fly rod was a great bonus. I believe this is strictly a gun show special, and while supplies last. Now I have to find me a decent matching reel. :D

That 10 wt rod will work just fine in the wind, fishing for big bonefish and GT. If that's what your after.... yes, you do want a reel with a good drag.

If your just tossing huge bass bugs and bulky wind resistant streamers to peacock bass.... you won't need that expensive a reel. I haven't had a peacock bass get me into the backing yet, even on a 5wt rod.

Aloha Stan, I settled on a reel for a very reasonably priced but very well built Australian reel:

This reel holds tons of backing, and has a very nice drag, and costs less than most entry level Chinese made reels of comparable size.

Aloha Ken, I just got this reel in the mail today, and I am impressed with the Alvey Australian quality especially the bang for the buck value. It has a great smooth multi disc drag, and it's graphite composite ans stainless steel construction makes it almost impervious to saltwater. This reel may not be too big for the 12 pound Milkfish in my private grounds. Sure you can give it a try. I'd like to try it out on the Kaku, Omilu and Pa'opa'o in Kaneohe Bay, or Ke'ehi Lagoon too.

I got the reel loaded up with 300 yards of 30lb. "Ugly Braid" and 11 WT WF intermediate fly line, but my doc has not released me to do any casting yet after recent back surgery. :x Hopefully by end of April. :D
