Red Devils on flies

Postby lastcall808 » Tue Sep 19, 2006 10:45 pm

Hey there Fishsing land,
I was wondering if anyone knows of any good color combinations or good flies for red devils? I've got some by my house and they are so fickle. I've caught some, but not consistantly on any fly.
Also, can anyone tell me anything about tying tapered leaders?

This week with the water up several feet from all the rain in the mountains, the red devils have been really spookie. We've gone from small streamer flys to nympths. I was using a 4 wt rod and 6# test. Again, the few fish we saw mostly ran away when the fly got near them. We did run into enough that were hungry (or angry) to have some fun. They were averaging 3/4 pound. Really fun on light tackle.

I was using white with tiny brass beads or barbell eyes. Something to make them sink. If they are active they will hit most any color. I just like the bright colors so I can see the fly. <grin>

For something different, try a super, super small fly and work the points for baitfish. We caught a lot more baby peacock bass in the 4 to 6 inch range than we did bait. Very aggressive when you can find them.

Aloha,
Stan
