Tues... Nice Weather

Postby Stan Wright » Tue Mar 10, 2009 6:06 pm

Clay and John and I have been testing new flys on the bluegill and red devils.

We use to catch a bunch of big bluegills around the lake.

Image

The red devils have been spooky this week. They mostly run from our flys. Guys using earth worms have been cleaning up.

Image

Those bluegills are suckers for nice bug looking fly.

The water level rose at least 3 feet since Sunday and the fish were scattered and not that aggressive. But John still accidently caught a few peacock bass while hunting for the panfish.
Sorry John, I forgot to bring the dip net.

Look at that little fly. Just a #10 AH hook with some silver Flash-a-boo tied on.

Image

See, lots of guys fish from kayaks on the lake.

Clay with another bluegill.

I was able to hook a few fish when I wasn't driving the boat.

With the water temperature reaching 76 degrees, the peacock bass were more active. The red devils are spawning and all over the place. If this sunshine holds for a few more days the fishing will only get better.
One of our "accidental" catches... This peacock bass was just over 1 pound, Aren't they beautiful?

Stan, what weight rod were you using? Good to see John score on his fly rod. Man, I gotta get out on the lake, i'm going stir-crazy.

I'm not sure how many bluegill we got. Seems like any fish that someone catches, it's like I caught it. I also start having so much fun I forget and loose count

I think John had a 3wt rod. Mine was a 4wt. I think Clay was using a 3wt too. Little nympth kind flys.

I better start tying some more of my tiny brown Opae flies that used to work so well with the local Smallmouths, sounds like they'd work great for the 'Gills & 'Devils.
