Bluegills?

Has anyone caught bluegills at lake wilson and where are they ussually located? Im new to the forum and have never fished at the lake before all information will be helpful

I don't think there are many bluegills left in the lake, at least compared to how it was in the past. I remember catching a dozen or more per trip on little popping bugs next to submerged trees. I tried this recently and didn't catch any. I'm afraid the cichlids and red devils have taken over the lake.

We got one a few months ago while fly fishing for peacock bass. It was larger than the current state record. The angler was suppose to turn in the record application.



We use to catch a lot of blue gill before the sulvenia molesta closed the lake.


Still catch a few from time to time, mostly on bead head nymphs while fly fishing.

Yes, there are bluegills. Visiting from Canada, the first fish I caught at Lake Wilson was a bloody bluegill! If I wanted bluegills, I could have driven 30mins from my house and it's all-you-can-catch bluegills Instead, I flew 10 hours to catch a bluegill

I used to catch large hand sized Bluegills so regularly at the area marked in photo that I used to call it Bluegill Bay. They were abundant in the spring on their nests, strictly C&R in this situation, but this was over 12 years ago and I haven't fished this area since moving back to Oahu from Maui last year.

That's where I caught my first peacock bass... we also caught a lot of bluegill in there. I haven't fished it in ages.

Clay caught this one on the north fork by the quanset huts.

WOW that looks like fun. One of my minor goals is to catch a hand size Bluegill on my new 3/4 fly rod, maybe in late spring after I'm all healed up.

That's a piggy! Nice bluegill. Now, if you're in Ontario and you can get 10 of them that size, you'll have a pretty good meal. But too bad the average size here is more like 7"...and the only one place I know that consistently produce 8-9" bluegills is not fish out (although now it is being better managed and we hope for a rebound)...anyways I digress...nice bluegill!
