Kaelepulu 'Awa'awa FUN

Postby Ahnkochee » Thu Jul 10, 2008 3:58 pm

Went out yesterday afternoon for a couple hours of trolling in the Pond, saw plenty action, even hooked into what I'm guessing a monster Kaku that was unstoppable and broke my line. Plenty aerial Kakus in feeding frenzies, was relaxing and exciting at same time. Got plenty hook-ups but managed to only boat these 2 'Awa'awa but a fun couple hours none the less.

Look just like the Lady fish in Florida, I guess they're the same thing. Almost Everyone/Everything I hear about lady fish is they're trash and most people avoid them like the plague. Yeah, they don't have the glamor of bones, reds, papio ect. but they are a heck of a lot of fun to catch!!! While I was in Florida I would go out with my 4wt fly rod and catch em it was a BLAST! Yes they're eager to bite but they can be tricky to land. I don't know how many I've had jump 6 plus feet in the air, the hook comes out...flying at my face. IMO they're aren't a whole lot of fish that put on a display like a lady fish.

The biggest one I caught was 38 inches, do Ladyfish get that large? I heard of some caught in Pearl Harbor going over 23 pounds caught on large live Tilapia for bait, maybe that's why some here call them Hawaiian Tarpon.
By and large same treatment as in Florida, like Rodney Dangerfield they get no respect.
