1st Annual Mark White Lures Catch and Release Tournament

Postby surfspot » Sat Jun 30, 2007 8:15 am

I will be running a state of Hawaii tournament for the month of September. The Department of Aquatic Resources will supply tagging and DNA sampling kits for all contestants. This is a research and conservation event, 1st in the state, designed for the protection of our near shore fishery and to also find out which colors and sizes of my lures are the most productive for size of and most fish caught. There will also be a fresh water division. Below a recent catch of a 30" Ulua that was tagged and released. mw

This tournament will be a cyber event. Since all the islands have fisherman using my lures the simplest way to do a state wide tournament is to do it with the help of ulua-fishing.com HFN will also run application info. in the August issue. To apply you need to contact Clay Tam at uluatagging@hawaii.gov

Post any questions you might have here. When your fishing, for the tagging process to work, you need to be organized. You have to have you tagging materials handy and a bucket or a tide pool to keep the fish alive and thriving for the release. A glove is necessary and a pair of pliers to take hook out of the mouth. Do this like a surgeon. You have to handle small Papio carefully so as to not injur the little guys. Ulua are a lot easier and can stay out of the water longer and still get tagged and released effectively. Prizes will be lures for all winners and runner ups and a perpetual trophy. Mahalo ahead of time for your efforts in this unique and what will be the 1st of many tag and release competions to come. Aloha Mark
