What is this Fish

Postby Stan Wright » Sun Mar 29, 2009 7:51 am

This week we caught several of these dark purple fish while going for red devils. I've seen white Red Devils .... orange ones.... orange/white ones..... orange/white/black ones.... but never a dark purple Red Devil.

It looks like a red devil... except for the color...
But I've never caught a red devil this color before.
Is it just a red devil of another color or something else.???

Now this is a "Red" Devil.

I'm guessing maybe a hybrid red devil/bass? That stil doesn't account for the purple color though.... :?

Hey Stan,

Check out this website...

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/

My guess...maybe a Amphilophus hogaboomorum? It's a close relative of the red devil.

Or maybe a barred Midas (Amphilophus citrinellus)?

If I have time, I would browse through all of them and help you ID it...but since I have 3 weeks left until I go on vacation, I gotta finish some work...so you're on you own this time

my guess as to the type of fish

My guess would be that it is a frontosa cichlid. There are several color variations, and they are very popular fish to keep. The most common is black and white, but I have seen several that are more red but not exactly like the one in the picture.

It is a barred Midas cichlid. A very close relative to the red devil and they can cross breed

We caught another one today on a crank bait over by Quanset Hut.
