Tackle for GT fishing.

Postby Stan Wright » Fri Jul 27, 2007 6:53 am

Landed this 7 lb white yesterday on the windward side of Oahu. It hit a green ¼ oz lure on 8 lb test line. I’ve been consistently having the best results on that color. Your lures rock!

The rod was a Powell 6'8" extra-fast action medium light model paired with a Daiwa Steez 2500 reel. Despite the extra-fast rating, the rod has a pretty soft tip so it's easy to chuck the 1/4 oz lure a good distance.

I used 8lb Berkley Fireline with a 3' section of 15lb fluorocarbon leader joined with a uni to uni knot. It took a little over 20 minutes to land. The first run took out about 100 yards of line.

If you're curious, the original treble on the lure held up fine. I had
the fish hooked on the bottom lip and there was no damage to hook, lure orline.

The stars must have been aligned for me that day because when I
usually fish that area, my tackle normally consists of a 1500 series Daiwa Certate loaded with 4lb Fireline and an ultralight Rogue rod. I don't think I would have had as good a chance of landing it with that setup. Maybe no chance at all, in fact. Instead I went out with my "heavy" gear and managed to pick up a good one.

The one thing I always use, regardless of my other gear, is
Mark White lures! I've been getting them from Charley's Fishing Supply
lately.

By the way, I haven't posted anything to the ulua-fishing.com site.

Thanks for a great product!

Aloha,

Alan
