A Tag Recovery Story

Postby Stan Wright » Wed Feb 29, 2012 3:30 pm

Got this from Clay Tam.
Figure it's worth sharing,
Stan

Wanted to share another interesting tag recover
with all of you from the DAR Ulua Tagging Project.

I got a call from Molokai about a tag ulua recovery
but they could not read the tag number close to the
barb as the end of the tag was cut off. So I had
them send the tag to our office.

The ulua was recaptued off of Momomi Beach (we have
not had any papio/ulua tagged off that area so I had a
hunch it was a traveler).

Fortunately when we received the tag we were able to
read the number with assistance from a mircoscope.

Here is the original tagging information:

Date Tagged: 4/30/2001
Tag. no.: U0487
Species: White ulua
Measurment: 25" fl.
Location: Bamboo Ridge - Oahu
Angler: Brett Fee

Recovery information:

Date of capture: 1/20/2012
Measurement: 42" fl.
Location of capture: Moomomi Beach-Molokai
Angler: Paitaka Reis Mawae

This ulua has been out the longest so far in this project.
It was at liberty for 3,917 days (10.7 yrs), grew 17" and
traveled approx. 35 miles (straight line).

Thank you for everyones help and support to the DAR Ulua
Tagging Project.

Mahalo,

Clay
