* Carry a knife with a blade that's long enough
to reach to the bottom of the peanut butter jar.

* Make three mounds of equipment when you pack
for a canoe trip. Place what you need in the first pile,
what you may need in the second pile, and what
you don't need in the third pile. Take all of the first pile,
none of the second pile, and one luxury from the third pile.

* The rule for canoeing with teens is, work 'em hard,
feed 'em well, and program all their time.

* If you don't keep kids busy on a canoe trip
they'll begin to act like "normal" children.

* A candle lantern and a good book will
light your tent and warm your heart.
(I can already hear you Boy Scouts:
"NO Flame In Tents")

* Everyone on a canoe trip should have a
specific job assignment -- cook, cook's helper,
fire-tender, dish washer, gopher, etc.
Rotate work assignments every few days.

* Don't wear navy blue clothes or rain gear.
Mosquitoes and black flies love the color.

The fishing for small mouth bass, lake trout, and pike
in the Boundry Waters Canoeing Area north of Ely, MN.
is fantastic. I can't believe I don't have any pictures
of all the fish we caught.

"Canoeist's Little Book of Wisdon", by Cliff Jacobson
Pictures from Troop 69 Canadian Canoe trip - 1965.
