Tiger Shovelnose Catfish in Oahu Stream

Postby Stan Wright » Mon Jul 28, 2008 12:30 pm

John, if you can find it again.... if you can catch it, it would be a new state record. LOL

Check out the pictures on this web site....

One ugly dude... One website said they can grow to about 6 feet.

One guy was trying to give his away... got to big for the tank. Eats mostly goldfish and earth worms.... Why you don't dump your aquairum in the lake.

Somebody caught one of those in Lake Wilson, then C&Rd da buggah?

If we going introduce large catfish to the Lake might as well go all out.

Today, Larry told me he saw a guy catch one of those at the boat ramp at Lake Wilson.
The Tiger one, not the Mekong one.... So if they get up to 6 feet or better.... There could be some big critters in the lake.

My old boss used to have one of those in his tank. He said that no other fish in the tank was safe and they all were eaten...plecos, reddevils, bass, bluegill all were fair game.

About a year ago I was kinda near Blue Boat point chasing schools of tucs when the action started to die down, so I put on a BIG deep diving crank bait, first cast I get SLAMMED! The fish broke my line relatively quickly but it felt like a 20lb+ fish, not really sure didn't have it on long enough, but it broke off my brand new 20lb line with ease....maybe it was one of those big tiger cats...who knows?

Maybe it was a big channel catfish. Lake Wilson used to have some big ones, 30 plus pounds. Have not seen those in awhile.

I don't think introducing those mekongs into the lake would be such a great idea. Looks like they'd eat up all the Tucs, LMB, SMB, small kids, dogs, etc.

I did see a koi swiming around near the end of the north fork yesterday though.

Nobody's serious about introducing these monsters.
From what I gather the Mekongs are herbivores not carnivores, maybe they'll bite dough like carp.
Those Wels are awesome!
The South American Piraiba, and Red Tail Catfish also get pretty large.

Speaking of large fish Nile Perch would be interesting, they are native to the Nile River but were introduced into Lake Victoria the largest lake in Africa and they have eating up the native Tilapia which the locals prefer as a food fish. They max out at over 400 pounds and 6 feet in length.

Both Tiger, and Lima shovelnose have been caught in the lake. All from people releasing aquarium fish. Who knows what all is in that place??????
