Yesterday Ken from Toronto finally got to rendezvous with me at my home for an afternoon expedition into my private fishing pond that we had been planning for several months. This is the first time fishing for me in over 6 months since my surgery so I was excited. We finally got my canoe the "Makule Akule" loaded and headed south towards da pond by 3:45 pm. First target: 'Awa'awa ('Awa'aua) trolling live bait but no bites, very unusual but had plenty rains which affected the salinity. Next target: 'Awa (Chanos chanos aka Milkfish) TONS of them, humongous ones by the hundreds BUT... they would not bite our limu/algae flies, I even got desperate and tried snagging them but no cigar. Next time I bringing my bow! >:( Finally after wasting over an hour trying to catch 'Awa Ken tied on a topwater lure and on first cast HANAPA'A KAKU! Of course I follow suit and start getting hits. Long story short the next hour was non stop Kaku action, with so many lost fish and a couple lost lures, improvising existing lures to topwater use, surprised we didn't catch more. All Kaku C&Rd. It was a blast, and nice way to break in fishing with Canadian friend. Ken we go again!

And I was going to bring my ultra-light with 4# test.
Let me re-think the tackle size......
Those are some toothy "freshwater" critters.

Looks like you guys were blind casting out in the middle of the lake, not working structure along the shoreline.????

I was using my ultralight 5' Ugly-Stick with Okuma reel spooled with 8 pound spectra diameter equal to 2 pound test mono. We were actually fishing the flats in a depth of about 18 inches. We could sight cast if the sun was out, and the water ripple free but with the overcast and disturbed water surface it was nearly impossible to see fish right next to boat even wearing polarized glasses. But that didn't matter as blind casts were producing just fine. On a few times I've been there under ideal sight fishing conditions the Kaku and 'Awa were plentiful. This was flats fishing at it's best watching a wake of a torpedo-like Kaku quickly approaching your lure and crashing into it with full force, not for the faint of heart.

Good to see that you can fish again. 6 months, I think I would go nuts!

Stan, I would say at least 8lb mono with a 30lb leader. Get some Zara Puppy or other topwater and work them at a good speed. Who am I kidding? You got those Ala Wai kaku all figured out...basically the same thing...but many, many more fish to play with

That's awesome guys! Topwater fishing is the most exciting technique by far! One time on the lake, a bass exploded on my Tiny Torpedo, and me being the novice I am, was so startled and excited that I instinctively jerked the rod, and the Torpedo with sharp treble hooks came about an inch from taking my eye out! Almost had a heart attack!
Ken, I'm glad you are having fun on your trip. So many good people with the ALOHA SPIRIT on this forum!
