Mix Plate

How can the fishing be so bad one day and so good the next day?
John and I went to the lake to take advantage of the spawning red devils.
From the recent fishing reports I'd read and talking to other anglers, I figured we'd be lucky to even catch a few red devils.
We didn't even bother taking any gear for peacock bass....
Turned out to be an action packed, fun filled 3 hours of fishing.

Image
I just knew that I had caught my first "Peach Devil". John was quick to point to the tail and inform me I had captured an Oscar.

Image
Never seen an Oscar this color before.

This is what we were after.... look at the hump on the head of this red devil. We must have landed 11 or 12 of these guys.

Then from out of the blue (well, from a brush pile) came this 1 1/4 pound peacock bass. Talk about fun on a light 4wt fly rod.
Image

Then it was Johns turn again. His little 3wt fly rod looked like a big letter "C".
Aren't these fish pretty with the sunlight behind them.

Another peacock bass. We saw a lot more than we hooked.... and we hooked a lot more than we landed. LOL

Where did the bluegill come from?

I liked this picture because it shows that simple little gold Charlie fly we were catching all the fish on.

Can you believe it, this nice little channel catfish got to the fly before the red devil that John was casting to.

A channel cat on a fly. What a great day on the lake.

I just got a call from Capt. Mike Hennessy who does bonefish guiding and deep sea fishing. Well, he also likes to take a client to Lake Wilson for a little fly fishing ever so often. http://www.hawaiionthefly.com

This morning they got a peacock bass just pushing 4 pounds, a 2 1/2 pounder and several more under 2 pounds. The larger fish were on Clousers Minnow flys.

They also found the red devils to be cooperating on "little gold flys."

I wish he had taken some pictures. That "exotic looking what ever it was fish" they caught sure sounds interesting.

Just another fun morning in paradise.
:D

I once saw a large totally red oscar up at rose street slough behind the middle school. It was a reddish pinkish color with the darker spots on the body. Few months later I saw him up by morgan's point. This was several years ago. I am seeing more oscars now, maybe because the water is lower.

Chris fished all day today, Tuesday,

He wouldn't tell me "where" he was fishing. ( I think it was near Kemoo Island ) He didn't use the electric trolling motor all day... just pulled up some place and beached the boat.

I think I heard him say something about 12 red devils and 25 or 30 peacock bass. I do know he started out with 50 live bait (goldfish) and used them all.

How can we all fish in his "secret spots" if he won't tell us where they are?
Did anyone see Chris on the lake today? Where was he?

Since today is Prince Kuhio Day, I'm "forced" off from work. I'll be hitting the lake this afternoon with some minnows and lures. 8)

If you see Chris... remember where you saw him fishing, and let me know.
On Tuesday he took 50 live bait and used them all. Today he took 100.
He must know something.

Hey Stan, I think I saw your "peach colored oscar" this morning at Morgan's point. He had the same distinct coloration.
