Friday 1/9 was a day with perfect conditions out on the flats. It was I "if I don't catch one today, I quit" day. Of course I didn't say that out loud because then if things followed the normal pattern, I would have to quit. You see, I was a (fly rod) o'io virgin. Despite the nice conditions, my friend and I walked around for a long time without seeing anything. I finally saw a tailer within range (which for me means pretty close by) and made a cast. Instant explosion. In about 2 seconds, my backing was seeing the light of day for the first time. I had to crank down on my drag. That first run was so long that there really wasn't a second one, just a few small surges. I got him in and my friend snapped a couple pics with my trusty disposable cam. We would have used some of Stan's fish enlarging techniques but I was too damn excited. Total length was fighting butt to stripping guide, 30". After that , we fished another fruitless hour or so but I didn't care. Oh, I caught it on a fly called a hand grenade that I copied from local guide Ollie Adams.
