Fishing? Call it "Catching"

When the first fish of the day is a 3 pounder... it's going to be a good day.
This is Margery holding Tag #4032, a peacock bass weighing 3 pounds. Length: 18 inches. Caught at Miki Miki Flats. It's one of 6 tagged fish she caught today.



Not all the fish were in good shape. This Large Mouth Bass, Tag # 8968 was 14 inches long but only weighed 3/4 of a pound. (A 14 inch peacock bass averages around 1 1/2 pounds)


Here are some pictures of Jason holding another 3/4 of a pound Large Mouth. This fish was caught 3 times within 2 hours. It seemed to weak for us to put a tag in it. Some of the largemouth we caught were healthy and just as fat as the peacocks. How do you figure????







This is how Margaret ended her day.... She was trying to catch a red devil along the shore when this peacock bass rushed in and stole her bait. Tag # 4046 was 21 inches long and weighed just over 4 pounds. Time to quit....... while they are still having fun.

It appears fishing is still going strong.

The pictures of the large mouth bass are pretty bad. Just by chance, has anyone done any recent studies of the LMB? Could it be health issues?

You mentioned that some LMB were as thick as Tuc's, but after looking at some of the pic's, could it be more?

I've never seen LMB that bad.

Gosh, they're all head and no body...or just a bag of bones.

For Marine fishes, when they get that skinny, its usually terminal or they need to feed constantly for weeks just to get their body mass back. Don't know how it is with freshwater fishes. I've caught a few like that and thought that it was their post-spawn weight and once breeding season was over, they would feed and get their weight back. guess not.

It just doesn't look right.

Tuc's have done very well. But when a good portion of the LMB being caught are that thin, there might be some serious issues at hand.

I've had the opportunity to catch LMB throughout the mainland and oversea's, but have never seen them look this bad. It's not post spawn or being not aggressive for food. It's beyond that.

It just too bad.

maybe it's a new virus like the LMB virus they had in Texas. It caused massive fish kills all over the state (incl. Lake Fork and Conroe) and the bass populations took several years to rebound.
