Water level was up due to the rain, so finding the nests of the spawning peacock bass was a little tough…
but not impossible. Water temperature was 82 degrees at 3:00 PM.

Several guys were trawling and were catching some large bass.
Lots of people on the lake on the weekends.

I tried the little white sinko… casting in close to shore around the grass and logs.
Caught some smaller peacock bass and a big red devil.


Since I was targeting smaller fish I switched to the Tenkara rods and really had some fun.
Here are just a small sample of what I caught.
This thing really put up a fight.


I missed a lot more than I caught.


The homeless are all over the place… mostly out of sight except for this guy over by the first bridge
who is using the lake as his private garbage dump. I sent pictures to the Health Department. If he wants to camp
on the lake he better read up on "stealth camping techniques".

I spent my first time really fishing the lake that day. I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t see the huge peacocks spawning, like in my dreams the night before, but it was still fun! Some may still be spawning but they really seemed like they were on the move. I would see pairs suspended in the trees on one end of the Kincaid’s area, and then see them or others again on the other end of it. I did catch a largemouth on a junebug trick worm – but they were suspended over cover. There was a lot of bait suspended on that 8 to 12 feet range.
I am still in awe of the numerous new fish I am encountering here in Hawaii.
We’ll see what happens next weekend, looks like the post spawn is here, but wouldn’t be surprised to still find some beds if the water stabilizes.

Stan, every time I see all them cichlids you're catching on your Tenkara rod you make me want to dust my Tenkara rods off for some action. Just out of curiosity have you tried Tenkara in saltwater? Last time I was out at the Kaneohe Sand Bar whipping a small gold Kastmaster I was hooking up numerous Obake Weke some right at my feet. they were plentiful and aggressive, and I thought they would be a blast to catch on a 5/5 Tenkara rod.

I've been wanting to get out there. I use to fish the bay several times a week. If you ule light tackle and work the shoreline and reefs there are all kinds of small fish. I use to target the barracuda. Lots of GT there too.
I bet that little gold flash-a-boo fly would work great. The gold spoons do.

That's why we started the Ultra Lite Hawaii fishing club over 30 years ago. You catch a lot more fish using 2# and 4# test line than when you're fishing with 12# test. LOL You want to catch one, 2 pound fish, or 20, ½ pound fish?
