Went fishing at Lake Wilson yesterday, didn't catch anything except for this grass carp using a secret lure. ( 2 1/2" swimbait on a leadhead jig )

The carp inhaled this lure and after a short battle, landed this 2 1/2 lb black and golden carp.

Takes a special skill set (luck) to hook a grass carp with a bass lure. Many have tried, most will fail.

Ancient Chinese proverb revised:

" Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he joins the HFFA and goes fishing.

Getting a carp on a lure is a rare event indeed.

Just to be correct, that is not a Grass Carp. Grass Carp do not have barbels. The fish in your pictures has very distinct barbel, and is most probably a Common Carp.

I believe there is no entry for state record common carp, 2.5 pounds sounds like the new record.

Aww!!! ('')

After we weighed that bugger, the fish went back into Wilson. My mistake, not a grass carp, just a common carp like the one here:

the one I got was mostly dark but had a nice golden tinge to the sides, kinda looked like a TUC at first until we got it closer to the boat and we could tell that it was a carp.

We used the scale that we use to weigh all the fish during HFFA tournaments. We did not take any pictures or take length measurements. Wasn't thinking about any State records, just kept the fish in our livewell so that I could show the others in the club (since I wasn't catching any bass) that at least I caught something!. (They say when fishermen get together to tell fishing stories, you need some deep boots.).

It seems like it might be a good idea to have the forms and know the information that you need to submit for a State record during any fishing trip to the Lake, never know when one might catch a fish that could be a potential State record fish.

I know there've been a couple record breaking Red Devils caught that were thrown back unknowingly.

I caught a carp on a roadrunner not to long ago. I was trying for a tuc on a flat, the water was less than a foot. I bounced the jig on the bottom near the tuc and the carp ate it instead. The carp was the same common type black, with a tinge of gold. First carp on a lure after all these years for me.
