I decided to hit up Ala Moana today. When I arrived it was windy and warm. The thing that struck me was that it was much prettier than the Ala Wai. After spending about 3hrs there I caught nothing. Not even a nibble. Used the same lures as the Ala Wai. The only fish I saw were various small reef fish like Moorish Idols and Hawaiian Sergeants.

bsp,

Well, it's like this.... Ala Moana and the mouth of the Ala Wai get lots of fishing pressure. Even gill nets... and they keep and eat everything that is caught.... regardless of size or kind of fish.

Now in the Ala Way.... the fish are said to be unfit to eat..... dirty unclean water. "If you can't eat them, why do you fish there?" is a common question I am often ask..... You might say it's a catch and release location and usually holds fish. Those few of us who do fish there normally practice catch and release any way so it doesn't worry us about not eating clean fish.

Give me a call, it's been some time since I fished the Ala Wai, and I hate to go out in the boat by myself. And besides, I haven't posted any fish pictures in a while.... is that not confidence? LOL

bsp,

stan is right on. I had something HUGE nail a popper off ala moana, but that was the only fish i saw there. as for the ala wai, its all where you fish. I didn't catch a damn thing near the mouth, you've gotta go far back inland. There are fish there just for the reasons stan stated; people don't keep em.

My other good "spot" in my 8 days of fishing Oahu were the flats in the southeast corner. wai'alae beach park through manalua (sp) bay. These are real easy access off the main road, and there a couple good parks there with opportunities. I just went right in the water with some old sneakers and waded around the flats (which extend a considerable distance) until i caught stuff. There are bonefish there too, so thats an added bonus. good luck.

Sorry Stan I cannot do that, but thanks.

Dave: I saw some people on the outside breakwall with 13 foot long rods who caught an ulua. Maybe you hooked one of those? I will try that park and hopefully catch a bonefish. Thanks.
