Chris and Takamitsu caught spawning fish all over the lake today. (up to 4 pound size) Water is still up, but starting to drop so locating the beds was a bit of a challenge. The beds are deep, but the water is clear. They slowly worked the shoreline pitching large white plastic lizards into likely spots. If there was a nest, the peacocks would react. That's how you find them. If they are just sitting there you never see them because of the deep water. But if they move.......

Then a few more casts would get the fish excited. The trick was a Japanese lure called a "Screw Bait - SS" (Slow Sinking) It would slowly sink down toward the nest.... then a little twitch and the fish would nail it every time. It looks like a topwater bait with a propeller at each end.... Chris said it was the best lure for spawning peacock bass he's ever used. (it should be... check the price.... LOL)

They also fished the edge of the grass around the saddle at BSA Island and around Mikimiki Flats. Lots of small peacock bass and red devils. The red devils are very aggressive at the moment. Said it was one of the best days this year.
They also saw a lot of peacock bass of all sizes just swimming around.

About how much is 4,500.00 is US dollars? I haven't heard the exchange rate lately.

At any rate, I'll stick with my favorite secret spawning lure that rhymes with fig!

If you have a bit of craftsmanship...

Take one of these (Smithwick Devil Horse)...



Drill a hole through the body...add in some lead into the drill holes to make it into a slow sinking or suspending lure...epoxy the drill holes and sand to make the surface smooth...re-paint to your favourite pattern...and now you can have a similar presentation for a lot less money

Two other companies also make twin prop lures (Heddon Wounded Zara Spook and Cotton Cordell Boy Howdy)...but I know the Wonded Zara Spook is made of a plastic shell. I'm not sure on the Boy Howdy.

The Devil Horse is wood...so it's easier to drill and to work with.

I remember about 15 years ago, there were no suspending lures...and there was one issue of In-Fisherman that talked about making your own suspending lures for walleye fishing by drilling holes into a Floating Rapala and adding lead to the lures into the drill holes. After a while, suspending lures came onto the market.

I have had very good results using lead sticker strips on smithwick rogues and other jerk minnows. This could easily be done to make the twin prop top water they have sink.. I actually just bought two.... But this is a cheaper solution... I am traveling back to PA next week for a visit... Cabelas and Bass pro shops is close to me there... Ill take orders for anything....Filthy

I was out today... We had one Peacock on my 5.5" Big Stick in watermellongreen color, but lost it in a weed bed.. Lost a Large mouth on that color too... All in a cove around 9am....
