After yesterday's harassment, I woke up today and just couldn't put my mind to work. I couldn't go fishing really since I have an internet installation appointment at my new apartment. But the guy came at 9:15am and got it done quickly...so I played hooky and took the day off. I got in a hurry and headed to the Holy Land again to see if there are a few more willing players.
I got to the stream side by 10:30am. Not a soul on the river. Just the way I like it As always, I started with a #16 elk hair caddis.
I fished a different sections at the start (Matt, where I said I wanted to check out yesterday). There's a nice pool that always seem to hold a decent size fish...but today, the water was a little higher and off colour. The current was pretty strong and it was difficult to get a good natural drift...so I went explore downstream.
This stretch is a lot of pocket water fishing...and it took a while to figure them out...but once I found out the fish were holding in some slow but broken water behind boulders, with a bit of depth and a nice current seam, it was easy pickings. Finding the right spot was harder than getting the fish to hit.
Victim #1 was a little brown.
Found Victim #2 nearby but it was reluctantly released without a pic...
Then I found a good looking seam with a bit of shade...and Victim #3. Love the colours on this little bow.
Released a few more small ones without any pics...before I got a fish that I thought was an Atlantic Salmon smolt. I took a pic before checking its characteristics...but alas it was just a brown.
Then I caught a really spotty brown
By now I think I caught 6-7 browns and 1 rainbow. I lost count on the browns that self released and I dropped another rainbow of similar size too.
Okay...so by now, it was 1:15pm. I had enough of the little willing browns and couldn't find any larger fish. I decided to head to where Matt and I was fishing yesterday and see if I can find some brookies.
A short drive later, I was stream side again. My stomach was complaining so I quieted it with a granola bar
Again, I was the only one on the river. I went to my favourite pool and started with the back eddy...but strangely it didn't produce today.
As I dry and reconditioned my caddis, some of the elk hair was falling out...and it is getting quite beat up
Didn't matter...I went to the little seam where Matt and I missed a 10" fish yesterday and found some small willing players. The big guy didn't show itself, but I did pull one out of there.
Hence completing the threesome. :applaude: I was my first threesome and man did it feel good
I went back to the main pool and pulled out a similar size fish with a parachute blue-winged olive. After they stop hitting the BWO, I switched to a parachute trico and pulled out another fish that was about 7"
When they stopped hitting the trico, I thought I'd try something different and put on a #16 rusty colour flying ant...and it was quickly approved by an 8" fish that I've seen rising once in a while.
Nothing else on the flying ant so I tied on a #4 green drake...and I guess they don't like green drake (really, it is too early for the hatch). I decided to do a little nymphing and tied on a gold beadhead pheasant tail and they didn't like it. At the end, I put on a cream colour caddis nymph and a few drifts later, I fooled a 7" brookie that had refused by dry flies just a while earlier.
I checked my watch and it said 3:30pm. So I called it a day and quickly drove back in hope of avoiding the rush hour traffic. I still got stuck in it...but with the threesome and a bit of trance music, I had a smile on my face all the way home.
Okay...back to work tomorrow...now I have no excuse
