Thats is a large mouth. The fishes smaller mouth and questionably shaped head have no bearing on its genetics (other than it may be a little awkward looking).

For example.....

That water just doesn't look like Lake Wilson water. I'm guessing a mainland fish. Good example of how LMB can look different!

No, that was caught at Lake Barrett in Southern California. A very special fishery that under the right conditions will yield 100+ fish days. The last 3 years we were blessed with such conditions and had some of the most epic days on the water. Unfortunately they have decided to drain a good amount of the water in a short period of time and it has slowed the bite considerably this season.

California seems to be pretty good at screwing up awesome fisheries! My "home" lake, lake Casitas used to have I believe 6 of the the top 10 largest bass ever caught....then they stopped stocking the rainbows in the winter that the big bass ate. From what my old tourny partner has told me there are still plenty of 9 and 10lbers being caught but hardly any fish in the teens caught anymore. Lake record was 21.4lbs if I remeber correctly. And there were usually a few 15lb plus fish caught every year. Its a shame, those big bass were what got me hooked on fishing when I was a kid. There was a little cove that I would ride my bike to in the summer almost every day (6 miles through some very steep hills with a 1 speed) I used to see wolf packs of 6 or 7 VERY LARGE BASS like world record size bass, and I'm honestly not exaggerating chasing trout. Not small either these trout were 3 and 4 pounders. Oh well, I still have the memories!
