Tenkara Day

Postby Stan Wright » Wed Oct 19, 2011 5:50 pm

:D
First time I've been on the water in a few weeks so I decided
to take it easy and target the red devils with my light Tenkara
rod with the 12 foot braided line and a 6 foot tapered leader.
#4 tippit. The Ayu is a 13 foot rod with a 5:5 soft action)
I heard the little peacock bass were around...
This is the size I figured on seeing.

This is the size I ended up catching...
Looks like something almost caught him by the tail.

The small fish were right against the shore... and very active.
For a second I thought I'd snagged the bottom... till my line
took off for deep water. The light Tenkara rod bent double...
All you can do is hang on... Even with the 4# test leader the
soft action of the rod more than handled the fish. Problem
was with a 12 foot line and 6 feet of leader and the 13 foot
rod bent double... I couldn't see what I had or how big it was...
How am I going to get this thing close enough to net?
Hand lining a larger fish with 4# test line did not seem like
a good idea. But the rod did it's job and soon the peacock
bass was on it's side next to the boat.

A 2 pound peacock bass on a light Tenkara rod. I think next time
I should have another angler along and a long handled dip net.

Oh, the red devils that everyone was telling me were so active all week?
This is the only one I could find all day.

Stan!

I'll be back on the island 29 Nov - 13 Dec, I need to go Tuc fishing!!

This time, we need to go catch big live bait -- just to toss at the pretty big Tucs.

Glad to see your Tuc breeding program is going well!!

That's a nice fish on that Tenkara. You have to have sweet skills on one of those rods with light line to land a 2lb Tuc.

Nice work and congrats!
