Monday Mar 28th Report

Postby Ca_Bass » Mon Mar 28, 2011 8:32 pm

Fished from about 1pm to 4pm Today....ran into a little trouble loading the boat up while executing my checklist. I always put the key in the inginition and give it a real quick turn..just to make sure it will fire up when I get to the lake. Well today it didn't . When through a whole bunch of possibilities. Checked batteries, wires connections....nothing was working. I had the cover off then decided to see if I could crank it by hand....was not even sure that was possible with my motor. Well on the "fly wheel"(I guess, not sure if that is the right name for it), it said make sure throttle is in neuteral(sp). And I thought Damn!!! Why did I not check that already...and that was the issue. Took me about an hour to figure out and I felt like an idiot!

Now to the fishin, didn't see much schooling besides a small 3 second flury as I was headed back. Pretty sure it was tucs...was a lot more water splashing then when the bass school. Caught 11 LGMB, got some on jigs, crankbaits, and some tiki craws. Missed a few because I was late on a my hooksets while I was fighting with the wind and also broke off what I assume was a nice one on a jig....he thumped that thing hard and took off and I set a little to hard and broke off. Was trying to see if I liked mono or flouro better than braid on the steez, well I don't, to much back bone. Caught 5 on a jig, 4 on a crankbait and 2 on the tiki craw...oh and 1 on a bassassasin so that makes 12 also had a couple tucs grab it but didn't hook em. None were over a 1.5lbs but I can not complain for 3 hours I was supposed to be doing work around the house!

Sounds like you had a good day on the water as compared to most others on Monday. I caught 2 tucs and 2 bass, all small ones and all on my cheap Pflueger President 6720 reel and 25 year old Fenwick UL spinning rod. I even brought along my 2 most expensive baitcasting combos, but had no luck with them. Should've just left them at home! Even my lure was just a 1/16 oz. jighead and a 2" curly tail worth about 35 cents! So how do you like your Core reel? You should post a review. Tip: flush those spool bearings and re oil. You will see a great improvement in distance because Shimano likes to put a ridiculously thick oil (might even be grease) in their spool bearings.

The core is nice! Very smooth and I can really dial it in. I wasn't trying to bomb with it...used it for pitchin..when I eventually get my steez reel I will probably lighten the grease and use it for another technique. Do all shimanos come with the thick grease on the spool bearings? For me it seems the more I use the reel the longer it starts casting. Maybe the grease starts to break down over time and allows for better casting. My newest curado doesn't cast as well as the same models that are about 8 months older. I don't really know all that much about the mechanics of my reels. The curado 300 DHSV I bought in 06 (probably my favorite reel I'm using now) freaking bombs lures! I wish they still made that model. I'd buy 3 or 4 of em!
