Hm...underestimated all my carp

Postby Ken » Sun Aug 08, 2010 3:04 am

Yesterday, I finished my work at the lab and went to the Islands again.

I invited my sister and her boyfriend to come along and they spent most of the time elsewhere, giving me some alone time to fish. :D

Fishing was slow yesterday...not a lot of fish seen...and those that I saw were not always feeding. :(

The other factor may have to do with my experimenting. I was fishing 8lb test the last two times. This time I thought I use heavier line since I want to see if I would lose less fish. I went to 15lb test this time.

About 15min after I started fish, I saw a feed fish that was plowing my chummed area. Before I knew it, my float was yanked under to hard and fast it almost yanked my rod into the water (I did laid a lot of slack on the water surface just to prevent losing a rod...that was how fast the fish ran off).

Unfortunately, I lost that carp due to stupidity. When I was threading the line through, I didn't realized I looped over one segment...so the line was caught on the blank and of course the fish couldn't pull out any line. The fish snapped the knot at the hook within a couple of seconds.

After that, I had a couple of solo fish swim in for a look. One was feeding all round my hooked bait but didn't take my hook. :?

Then there was nothing going on for a hour. When my sister and her boyfriend came back, I have the chance to move location (They left their stuff with me while they rented a bike).

So I went to the location where I fished the first time. I saw a few fish signs and did hook up within 15min again. 8O This fish put on a great show for al the passerby. And not to disappoint anyone, I did land the fish.

Now...about underestimating my fish...I thought my arm was 24" long from fingertip to shoulder...and this fish was just the size of my arm. I had measured all my previous fish based on the size of my arm. However, when I measured my net loop this morning, I found out my fish was actually closer to 28". 8O I measured my arm again and my arm was 27" long. This fish was about the average size of the carp I've caught. All my other fish caught before was actually bigger than I had thought. So all my fish are likely close to and over 10lbs. :D

Anyways, after that fish, I had one more quick rip from another fish. I thought the fish merely bumping into my line...but after 30mins of soaking seeing two fish milled around my hook without taking it, I found out fish had sucked the corn off my hair rig when I got that hit...so I was soaking without bait for 30min :?

This is the second time I noticed that once the sun goes behind the trees, the fish seemed to stop feeding all together. It was a little strange since I saw many times on YouTube videos that people are fishing on clouday days. Maybe it wasn't so much about low light...but the time of day that put fish on feeding mode.

By 8pm, my sister and her boyfriend were hungry enough to call it quits. So I packed up and leave as well. No last cast fish this time

Action was much slower than the last two times...but at least I get to tug on a fish :)
Caution - Objects in picture are smaller than they appear.

I am genetically predisposed to make fish look bigger than they really are.
