I received a text from Matt and Cuong on Friday about them finding the motherload...so with Saturday off, I figure to give Innisfil another try.
I picked up Cuong at 7am and off we go. We decided on fishing with lures only today and didn't pick up any shiners...maybe we should have...oh well.
Cuong had a rough idea of there to fish, so we made a beeline toward THE SPOT. Well, it looked like some of the huts were moved and THE SPOT was hard to identify.
So Cuong took a best guess and we each drilled one hole. We popped in the fish finder to see the occasional fish came in. After a while, Cuong spotted one fish on the graph, gave his Swedish Pimple a jiggle, and FISH ON!
I came over to remove his transducer and get ready to land the fish. When the fish was in the hole, I went for the grab...and got one of the hook point into my finger Natural reaction was to pull back and the fish went back into the hole. But Cuong went for the second grab and made the landing.
Small native whitefish with all fins intact.
So we fish this spot long but didn't have fish move in...so off to spot number two, three, four and five. Number two has a few fish on the screen but nothing biting. Three four and five were just blank!
At the end, we found the proper coloured huts out there and we fished on the left side of the hut finding nothing. There was a group to the right side of the hut so Cuong and I went to set up away from the group but still within ear shot.
We drilled the first two hole just in time to see someone from the group hooked up. I dropped my transducer in and saw the bottom stacked with fish. Cuong missed 3-4 hits in a roll before I hooked my first fish...all within a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, there was a double in that group and there was one guy behind us hooked up too.
So...we found the motherload again!
A decent pic for my fish list...always looking for the best pick for my fish list
I dropped my half-and-half in again and the guy behind us hooked up again. I saw three fish came in and felt a good hit...set the hook, and settled into a long battle. Meanwhile, Cuong was not seeing as much fish on his side so he came over to fish closer to me.
My fish was running! The first run took 50 feet of line. It kept running to the side and most of the time, my rod was in the water trying to keep the line off the edge.
Finally, it was coming in and we could see that it was snagged in the snub where a fin was clipped. First of all, it was a 7-8lb whitefish...a PB for sure...but the fish was snagged on the pelvic fin and there was no way we could maneuver the fish to come up the hole. Cuong tried tail grabbing it twice but the fish was too slippery. So at the end, I made the decision to just pop the lure off and let the fish swim. Oh well...it was a fun fight anyways.
Cuong made a round of calls to some of our buddies from GoFishOnt and the came to join us. UncleBen was out there too with his female friend and he came over too. He was fishing 85FOW near Snake Island and caught only perch and 1 whitie.
Mario was also going to join us later too.
Our buds from GoFishOnt (Horseshoe, Lil' Horsie and Just Peachy) came over and set up shop. They go a couple of fish and were marking lots. We were marking to but now they were line shy. I did managed to hook one, but in the midst of getting up after the hookset, I tipped back on the bucket and almost fell off. That little bit of slack given was all it took for the fish to come off.
Mario came a while later with his daughter. He set up shop next to us. After a lot of jigging, he finally hooked up one.
After Mario's fish, another good wave of fish came in and I missed a fish.
The group from GoFishOnt decided to call it a day while we stayed until about 5pm. We had a few more hits but couldn't seal the deal.
In the end, we finished the great day with some home cooked burgers and fries. MMM!
