Fun Saturday

Postby Stan Wright » Sat Jan 09, 2010 7:54 pm

John and I didn't get on the water until around 11:00....
we spoke with several people who said we should have
been their earlier... the schooling peacock bass action
had slowed down. Just a little splash now and then....
not the wild feeding like yesterday.

I staterd working a rattle trap type lure deep and
slow and got this one.

John landed one and then the action just stopped.

We started looking for those huge schools of red devels
I had seen on Friday. Gone. The weather had changed.
To day it was overcast and wendy. Water was also
2 degrees colder. We still managed to fool a few.
Notice the big hump on this males head.......
must be nearly spawning time.
Image

The RD were really skiddish and ran away when
we cast near near them. But a few (very few)
would charge after the fly.

Just as we were about to call it a day....
John spotted a big fish against the shore.
He laid the fly within 8 inches of the fishes head....
it turned and sucked in that fly up like a giant
vacume cleaner. The fight was on.

In all my years of fishing, I've only hooked one
carp on a fly rod. They usually ignore any offering.
Hay, go for it... you never know.
Image

For the next 15 minutes the carp dragged the boat
around the lake. I used the trowling motor to keep
us out in deep water away from structure that it
might get tangled in.
Image

After several attempts I was finally able to
net John's fish. It tipped the scales at just
over 5 pounds.
Great ending to a fun day of fishing.
