what kind of fish is this?

Postby AHK Daddy » Tue Jan 31, 2012 10:49 pm

Took my family to Hoomaluhia this weekend. My daughter was reeling in her line when this little guy chased the bait to the shoreline and hooked up. Someone said it is a Nicaraguan Cichlid, but it doesn't look like the pictures I googled. I think it looks like juvenile peacock bass. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Yep. A Tuc fingerling for sure.

Pretty awesome to know there are Tucs in Ho'omaluhia, hope they get big and fat feeding on the countless Red Devils in there. I wonder if there are many Pongee in there too. :D

Wow, I may have to start going fishing up there...
Open to fishing on Sat. & Sun from 10 to 3... I think.
Use to be hand pole only and only on the area at the dam.

Wonder if they could survive in Enchanted Lake?

I think the brackish lake is too salty for Tucs but perfect for Florida Snook or Oz Barramundi.
I wonder how much salinity a pongee can handle. The Kaku in there got wiped out by some shelfish bonehead fishermen who kept every kaku he caught especially the large breed stock. Now the tilapia population is getting out of control, need more predators in there. A bunch of pongee could help.

You forgot about tarpon

The kaku was fun...too bad. :(
Caution - Objects in picture are smaller than they appear.

I am genetically predisposed to make fish look bigger than they really are.

Not sure to what extent, but largemouth can handle brackish water. They can even spawn in it...actually just learned that the other day about the spawning. Pretty cool! I had no clue.
