Catching bait

Hi guys! I read in the previous posts that you can catch small cichlids with hook and line. What hook size are you using? Where do you usually find these small cichlids?

Aside from bread and earthworms, can you use other bait? Shrimp? Squid? Do they bite small plastic grubs or plastics that imitates worms and insects?

Thanks much! :D

I use a tiny #20 limerick hook and a tiny piece of a Berkley Gulp worm. Real worms or maybe bread would work much better, but that's all I have and so that's what I use.

Hey Ken,

I catch a lot of ciclids by my house using shrimp and a size 16 MZ (curved) hook. I like the curved hook because i find it easier to remove. I'll also use a small piece of worm plastic ( about the size of a capital O).
For the plastic i just skit it over the surface at a good speed.
Hope that helps

I was catching them today with some super small trout flys. They just chased anything that moved. Caught them along the mud banks where the water was down, right against the shore.

Awesome! I tie a lot of flies on my own as well. Hopefully I can catch some of them and then use them to catch a tuc! :D
