I've always wanted to fish the Colorado River in Black Canyon.... My first words to Mark were; "Where shall I meet you, and what time?"
We launched the boat at Cotton Wood Cove Marina near Searchlight. About an hour and a half drive from Las Vegas. It was a blue bird day, no clouds or wind... about 78 degrees. Not your typical November weather. and not really cold enough for big stripers.
The fish and game barge was going down river from cove to cove pumping out tanks filled with nice size rainbow trout. The barge was followed by a flotilla of sport fishermen. Some casting large "rainbow trout" looking lures for the stripers, others using light spinning gear for the trout. Other anglers had driven to the cove and were whipping plugs from shore..... No one was catching.
We set out two huge lures and slowly trolled the areas near the points and ledges near where the trout had been released. SLOW trolling. About 1 1/2 MPH. The floating lures swam 150 feet behind the boat their backs flashing in the sunlight and leaving two "V" wakes in the still water. These lures look just like real fish.
It was a wonderfully relaxing day on the water. Beautiful clear day, great company, excellent food, and not interrupted by a bunch of fish.
Well, that's not true, a 5 pounder smashed one of the lures. Those big stripers like the nasty cold weather with strong wind. That's OK, I still had a great time and can't wait till my next Las Vegas visit. That's why they call it "Fishing", and not "Catching".
When I got home I found this e-mail on my computer....... "The trip on the week after yours did not do anything either as the weather was beautiful. However today, it was 31 degrees with the wind chill...... at 4:30 AM and we caught a 28# fish along with some 5# - 10# fish. We also lost a couple of big ones. I guess it was just a little early for the big fish when you were here.".... Mark.
