i have a pflueger president and a trion and both reels do just fine. fairly smooth and no problems . i have seen other reviews that bad mouthed em but i have had mine for several yrs and both still trucking along. i think you really can't go wrong with a shimano i have a few low end ones and they are great, i can only imagine the upper end ones are better.

I favor Quantum, but my Shimano Sedona 4000 (?) hasn't ever let me down.

You need skunked to chime in , he's the tackle Ho lol. Anti reverse is a must ! So many quality reels from so many companies it's tough to choose. Lews has always had some of the smoothest, quality reels for the best price. I have a quantum pt spinning reel its amazingly light and dependable, also a daiwa fuego and it's great. Bottom light find a line capacity you want and look for solid anti reverse good drag and light weight in a name you trust. Check the bargain caves cause sometimes they have really great deals on the more expensive reels.

I don't have this reel but if I was to buy a new one, I might give this one a try:
Pflueger® President® Spinning Reel. It seems to have good reviews on the Cabela's website.

With so many models and choices it comes down to a personnel preference. I still use my Daiwa's BG series reels that I've had for over 25+ years and they still work great - kinda on the heavy side compared to all the new model reels now.

I have a Pfluegger Trion and it has been the best spinner real I have ever owned. I'm planning on buying another one. I would definitely recommend it.

Haha, I lol'd on that one! I agree with some others who mentioned the Pflueger President. I have a 20 size ultra light and it is smoother than both my Shimano Stradic Ci4 and Stradic FI reels which seem to get a lot of unwarranted praise here and everywhere. For about $15 more, try checking out the Daiwa Exceler too. This is just my opinion.

Go see Brian, at Brian's Fishing Supply on South King Street.

He has a great selection of reels at the best prices in Honolulu.
These days the only reels I use are Shimano.

^^^ Best spinning reel I've ever used. Maybe tacklewarehouse still has some on clearance. Much better than any Shimano below the Sustain series. A little over your stated budget but totally worth it.
