Hi, please allow me to introduce myself.

Im originally from Hawai'i, but have lived on the mainland for 18 years. I currently live in San Diego and my job is potentially relocating me to Hawaii later this year.

I fished Lake Wilson reguarlly as a kid but it sounds like there have been many changes (the intro of exotics) to the eco system. I primarily fish for LMB, but cant wait to hook into another Peacock Bass. I also enjoy fishing for smallies and would love to tag a long on a hike to fish streams.

I do have a few questions;

1. Do people float tube Lake Wilson (or other fresh water bodies)?
2. What are the colors that are most productive for LMB?
3. Do finesse techniques (drop shot, wacky rig) work in Hawaii?
4. Any tackle stores that are freshwater specific?

Im sure I will have more questions in the coming weeks, but thats enough for now. Thanks in advance I look forward to meeting and fishing with you guys.[/b]

1) I've seen one person use a float tube on Lake Wilson. IMO, its a step up over bank fishing, but a small boat is optimum to get to the different "good spots".
2) Most lures that work on mainland bass word on these bass as well. Most cranks, jerks, etc. that resemble a shad or perch work well.
3) Drop shotting on the points is quite effective at their given times. Finesse is the ticket on this lake.
4) No freshwater specific tackle stores here on the island. Some have a "very" modest selection of freshwater lures, etc. Most of us mail order from BPS, Cabelas, etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for answers, i really appreciate it. I now have a couple more.

Are there place to launch from shore at the best spots on the lake?
I read about a sewage spill at Wilson, what is the overall water quality?
Do they warn not to have long term contact with the water?

Thats unfortunate about a tackle shop. Another place I buy from is http://www.tacklewarehouse.com they carry everything and have competitive shipping rates. Give em a shot.

Two risks to consider when float-tubing Lake Wilson:

1. The legality. The rules state:
http://hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar/regulated_ar ... ml#wahiawa
Prohibited
To swim, water ski, camp, picnic, build fires, dispose of refuse or pollute the waters, or damage public or private property.
Each DLNR enforcement officer is free to interpret this rule any way he wants.
2. Health Risks. You will see these signs along most freshwater shorelines where there is public access including Lake Wilson:
http://hawaii.gov/health/about/pr/2004/ ... lepto.html
Image
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that is primarily carried by rats and mice, although dogs, pigs, cattle and horses can also become infected. The disease is generally transmitted to humans by exposure to fresh water that is contaminated with urine from infected animals. Infection can take place when contaminated water enters the body through the mouth, nose, eyes or open wounds.
Individuals who develop flu-like symptoms (high fever, severe headaches, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting) and have had fresh water, mud or animal exposure during the preceding three weeks, should immediately see a physician and inform the doctor of any environmental exposures and skin wounds.

Thanks Ahnkochee, that was the info I was looking for. Kind of a bummer though.

You be better off getting a cheap used kayak on Craigslist here and avoid both potential problems.

Jeepnkal,

Glad to see you got your wish to go back home.

Like you, born in Hawaii, now live in North County San Diego. I do get lucky and go back to Hawaii, a couple times a year. Always try to find the time to fish at Lake Wilson.

Still wish I was living full time in Hawaii.

I like your fish porn, fishing here is San Diego is always a lot of fun.

Take care and welcome back home.

Jeepnkal,

Way cool, at least your fishing. I was in Bangkok last week, flew home for 36 hours and flew out to Orlando, for the ICAST show.

Setting up our Phenix Rods booth today, show starts Wednesday. Just another day in the fishing community.

However, a couple of our guys went fishing last night and caught:

3 gators up to 10 lbs  (Didn't know they like rubber frogs too)
2 small bass

Enjoy Southern Cal's best fishing!!
