I was looking through the Hawaii State Freshwater records (http://www.hawaiifishingnews.com/records.cfm) and noticed there is no Common Carp in the record books (Grass Carp a totally different species, and not found in Lake Wilson). I've caught Carp in the lake over 4 pounds, and I've seen them MUCH bigger. I guess the next time I'm on the Lake I'm trying for the record.

When my granddaughter was 3 yrs. old, (2 years ago), she caught a 4 lb. carp on little 3' kiddie rod & reel. Whats the difference (in appearance) between a grass carp and a common?

I have pictures and a weight on my "little 3 pounder"..... But I'll wait and catch a bigger one before I fill out the paperwork.

Okay so I have to beat 3 pounds at least.
Can I just take pictures, measurements, and weigh on my digital scale or do I have to bring it in to an official scale? I hate to stress the fish out or worse yet kill it just fo' make "tantaran".

Is this the same kind fish we're talking about here?

Go to the State Records website. There is a page somewhere there that gives the procedured for submitting for a State record. I remember; the catch has to be witnessed by someone; the fish has to be weighed on a certified scale. I think the scales at Wahiawa Foodland and/or Tamura's are certified. I'd meet with one of those stores managers and get pre-approval rather than just show up to the meat dept. asking them to weigh your fish. It should be photographed next to a tape measure as well.

Hope I don't have to stress the fish out too much just for a record sake. They ask for scale location and serial number which seems to count out my accurate though cheap digital scale.

Awesome Koi Stan, must have bent your Tenkara rod to it's limits! Looks like the one I caught a few years back.

Easiest way to tell them apart is the dorsal fin the Grass Carp's being proportionately much smaller, also the head on the Grass Carp resembles that of a Mullet with a forward facing mouth unlike the Common Carp (Koi) with it's downward mouth and two barbels.
