Match the Hatch

Match the Hatch

What this means is "give the fish what they want". A fly fishing term.... you use a fly that matches the size and color of the real insects the fish are feeding on at the moment.

If peacock bass are eating small shad... use a lure or fly that is the same size, and color as the size shad the fish are feeding on. Match the hatch...

What if the fish are eating dog food? Well, da! You use a "dog food fly".

I'm not mentioning where in Hawaii a few people are feeding dog food to their fish.
Remember that wildlife feeder I put up on the lake a few years back? Fish flocked to it within 3 days. Everyone was catching all kinds of fish. Great place to take a kid fishing.
Then some one stole my feeder. :x :(

Anyway, dog food... I got some brown egg yarn and tied up a few salmon egg flys. My brown wasn't exactly the same brown as the dog food, the size needs adjusting, and the fly slowly sinks, while the dog food floats..... Many of the big carp would swim up to the fly and then refuse it at the last instant. Same thing with the catfish and red devils... But every once in a while the match was close enough to fool a hungry fish.

Looks rather like da dodo fly to me

Maybe add a little brown foam to bulk up the fly and help it float? Just brainstorming. :D
