Lake El Salto - Mexico

Late January, My friend and I traveled to Mexico for a bass fishing trip to Anglers Inn at Lake El Salto. We flew to Phoenix and then to Mazatlan in Mexico. From there ,it is in the van and off to the lake. The ride takes a couple of hours. We got to the lodge at 2pm and were out on the lake by 3pm. Why waste time ??
We started of throwing some green lizards in the stick ups. I got a couple of hits, but missed them both. James catches the first fish of the trip... a beautiful 8 pound, 8 ounce beauty. The bass there are Florida large mouth and they are strong and healthy ! That was to be the biggest fish of our trip !
Anglers Inn is located right on the lake. It is the five star bass fishing resort of Mexico. Disneyland for bass fishermen ! They will spoil you with food and service. If all you want to do is eat, sleep, and fish, then this place is heaven ! Every cast could be a monster fish. We fished for five days and caught and released over 300 large mouth bass. The biggest was that first 8-8. We had an 8-2 and some others in the 7 pound range. The biggest fish caught at the lodge while we were there was an 11-2 on a senko.
We tried topwater lures in the morning, but the fish were not in the mood. Just a week or two before we got there, the action was hot and heavy. The fish were starting to transition to the deeper water before the spawn, so they just were not taking much on the top. That was a disappointment for us and our guide Manuel. He has worked the lake for over 20 years and he knows where they should be. We worked hard. Threw lots of lizards and senkos. Mostly dark greens. Learned how to work a Texas rig better. Senkos were my favorite/ wacky style. Every day consisted of five hours in the morning followed by lunch and a siesta ( nap ). They would wake you up at 2 and go out again till dark. Great way to live ! Eat dinner, sleep and do it all again the next day. Dont forget the Pacifico beers and the marguaritas. All you want... Bring your own cigars !
We had the time of our lives. Caught tons of 2 -1/2 to 3 - 1/2 pound fish. Great fighters. Wished that there were more 6-7 pounders, but why complain. Fishing is all about timing I guess. Next trip , maybe a ten pound plus fish ! All I know is, that I will be going back there again. Anybody wants more info, just let me know. This was my second trip there and I love this place. Check out some of my pics.
