Lake Wilson On TV

Did you guys see the news report on KHON TV-2 about the sewage pumped into the lake? With the mainland geting all those contaminated vegetables, there is a concern that water from the lake may cause problems if it's used for irrigation of crops or if people eat the fish.
The health department is doing water testing and will continue to do sampling from around the lake in the future.
I also remember hearing that Rep. Ed Case has secured federal funds to extend a sewage line from Pearl Harbor to the Wahiawa plant. That would stop the dumping into the lake. I spoke with a guy that works at the plant and was told that the water being pumped into the lake is cleaner than the water in the lake.
I haven't eaten any fish from the lake, but I know people who do. I like catch and release.... I also hate cleaning fish.

The water coming out of the Wahiawa sewage treatment plant is cleaner than the water in the lake unless there is a system failure or a real heavy rain, that is the only time it becomes a problem. I do not see why we have to spend money on that. Ed Case is a loser!
The treated water also fertilizes the lake which drives the food chain in the lake. Without the treated water, will the fishery decline? Will we end up with a lot of scrawny fish? Will we have to feed the fish like they do on Kauai?
A few years ago, I was fishing at Morgan's point when some guys wanted some tucs for a study to see if it was safe to eat the fish. I wonder what the results were.

There is talk about trying to add more forrage fish to the lake to feed the game fish. Seems like lots of shad are already there, but some of the old timers say there aren't nearly as many as there use to be. I've noticed the peacock bass are healthy and fat where as the largemough are skinny. Mayhaps the peacock bass are just faster.

I agree, the peacock bass look healthy. I've caught several peacocks that were previously caught & released. You can see the small holes where the hooks have penetrated. I even caught one with a crank bait still stuck in his upper lip. Catch & release doesn't seem to affect them physically, it must be in their nature to attack baitfish.
I think the lake needs more baitfish or crawdads to support the largemouth. Many of the largemouth look sickly & stunted. Small skinny bodies; but, big eyes. Most of the tagged fish are growing fungus on the wounds where they have been tagged. Many of the tags are also unreadible -- can't report numbers that I can not see. Maybe my eyes are bad???

Howzit Kaapeha173, was the crankbait a shad rap, that might have one of mine. I was fishing the north fork last week. I lost 2 that morning. Oh well. Most of the bass I have caught are skinny too, unless they were just released. Maybe they should put some Florida bass in the lake. They may be better suited to survive in the warmer water. Of course, they might eat all the small tucs if they get big enough.

LOL.......Laughing Out Loud...... I hate to tell you this but we've been trying to bring the Florida bass to Hawaii since before 1970. Every year we testified at the legislature.
Ever see that picture of the red wing blackbird sitting on the cat tail and the largemouth bass jumping out of the water to grab it?????
The friends of animals or someone brought that picture to a legislative hearing and swore up and down that if we brought Florida largemouth to Hawaii that they would eat up all the endangered species of bird in Hawaii. Honest........ The sad part is that our elected officials believed it.

It is good to know that you guys are still trying, do not give up. We already have the largemouth bass here and they do not seem to be eating up all the birds. Did you go out today Stan?
