Go Deep Young Man......
(Apologies to Mr. Greely: "Go West Young Man")
This last few weeks I've seen some very successful anglers. One reason was that if something wasn't working, they were quick to try something else. That something else was fishing deep. Down where the big ones lurk.
One angler tried a deep diving crank bait. Working the schooling peacock bass chasing shad in the middle of the lake, he could get the lure down under the smaller fish and was rewarded with some nice size fish. He also caught fish off the deep points.
While fishing Morgans Point with live bait, another angler discovered that the larger peacock bass seemed to be deep. He started using a lead head jig to get his live bait quickly past the smaller fish down to the larger fish.
I tried using a curly tail jig and also a metal spoon. By allowing the heavy lure to sink to the bottom and then working (retrieving it slowly) like a plastic worm I was able to hook some nice size peacock bass. (I got a lot more strikes by tipping the hook with a minnow... but it worked just fine by it's self.)
Normally when fly fishing I use a floating line. Recently I discovered the benefits of using a sinking tip or full sinking line. Again, fishing from shore at Morgans Pt., the sinking line would carry the fly swiftly to the bottom. As soon as it hit the bottom we would start stripping the fly in as quick as possable. Those big peacocks hit hard.
There are some huge peacock bass in Lake Wilson... and geting down deep might be just the place to find them.

damn! the secrets out
for some time ive been having my best days fishing deep, days no ones catching and i get 5 or 6 good bites.its not often alot but the quality is there. no one can deny the rush of hitting busting fish but on days when nothing else works, reverting to a slow methodical deep pattern often saves the day!
