Ulua kihikihi (Kagami )

Postby shanai » Sun Jun 09, 2013 9:39 am

The anykine anglers were out again on Saturday in search of papio. This time, we were not only looking to tag and fin clip any papio species but the quest was on to catch the elusive juvenile Ulua kihikihi or kagami papio. This papio is also known as the African pomano or Alectis Cilaris, and is arguably one of the most exotic looking fishes in the water. Some other names used to describe this fish is mirror or threadfin papio.

We've encountered sightings of this elusive fish in previous outings, and have had near hookups, only to have the fish disappear like a ghost as it teased us by chasing our lures then breaking away at the last moment.

Today was no different. We hit our “secret spot” for another morning of anykine angling. It was several hours of fishing and just when we were about to call it a morning, the unmistakable iridescent bluish gray hue and long threadlike filaments flowing rhythmically in the water of the kihikihi/ kagami papio made it's presence known. The fish chased our lures only to break off as it swam off into deeper waters. We threw all kinds of lures but could not get the elusive fish to come back. ( We kinda know how Captain Ahab must have felt with his obsession with that white whale )

While we didn't get our kihikihi/kagami today, all was not lost as we did manage to get this 10 ¾ inch white papio.

We did our usual CPR, tag and clipped fin and the fish was released to fight another day.

Number 1 anykine angler Garey got this kaku near the end of our morning to conclude another anykine fishing adventure.

My last one weighed in at 32 pounds. The little ones are much prettier.
