got that sucka

always fun to see your posts, ken. tho i don't make comments that often, and haven't been up to the lake in a couple of years, i still have a yearning to go back. unfortunately, my boss (wifey) doesn't want me to go, let alone accompany me, back to lake wilson because of the greater number of undesi...

the only other places i've been to are behind wahiawa middle school - the "rose street slough" (?), and morgan's point. you have a long walk across the field behind the school, and a long drive across some canefield roads to get to morgan's point. morgan's point is not that difficult to find, just k...

i don't want them to get gut-hooked, so i don't freeline too long before setting the hook. if you insure that your hooks are sharp, they won't usually don't come off. just unlucky, i guess.

yep, the water level IS down. went yesterday and haven't been up to the lake for a couple of months when the water level was real high. being a bank fisherman, i appreciated the lower level - more area to work from. wifey caught a few channel cats - biggest being about 2 1/2 #s - and i only landed 1...

was that largemouth caught on kauai? or at lake wilson? looks like our wahiawa largemouth - skinny! has anyone figured out why our largemouth are so seemingly undernourished? altho i like the fight of a tuc, i remember years ago that the largemouth were more "normal" in proportion - much healthier l...

water level on the lake

the forum's been pretty quiet lately. anybody able to tell me if the water level is still high? plan to go there soon, and we fish from shore, so any info is appreciated. thanks.

my own opinion - i wouldn't want jetskis in the lake. very noisy, and i'm sure their wake is as disruptive to shore fishermen as boats are. most boat jockies are considerate and slow down when they see fishermen on the shoreline, but not all. again, just my opinion.

still think it's some type of tilapia, since there are a bunch of different tilapia species here. don't think it's a red devil. it looks like one of the tilapia types that are sold in chinatown.

wow! i wish it was a giant gourami. i remember seeing, catching and eating those in vietnam! they're good fighters on light tackle and they are omnivorous (eating both plant and animal matter). but i have to disagree, it looks like the young man caught a good-sized tilapia. there are still some larg...

my wife and i went a couple days ago, and the small tukes were hitting anything small enough to fit in their mouths that was retrieved relatively fast, so had to increase size of bait or lure to even get a chance at the larger ones. good fun anyways!

wow! i wish i grew up in wahiawa! i would've loved it! i grew up in kaimuki and as a kid in the 50's and 60's i went to the palolo and manoa streams to fish and fool around (wahiawa was too far in the "country"). i also remember an abundance of puntat, tilapia, dojo, and sometimes carp and bass. now...

lake wilson set-up

i agree with "leoric" - no need floater. i use 4# test main line on a teeny spinner, then barrel swivel and either 4# or 6# hook leader. i'm like stan, an ultra-lite fan. with a tilapia or medaka as live bait, you should get plenty action with tucs. even caught channel cats and largemouth. and with ...

howzit! my cabelas rod originally was a 6 ft "fish eagle" rated for 2-8#, 2 piece, fast action, about the same age as your fenwick. it broke at the ferrule years ago when i tried to bring in a good size papio and the 2 pieces weren't screwed together tight (stupid!), the tip broke once (obviously, i...
