Regardless of who said what, it's obvious that this thread is heading in the wrong direction. My impression after reading Stan's original comment is that he was complimenting chris16 and his dad by suggesting (tongue-in-cheek) that he (Stan) and Skunked follow them - NOT TO VERIFY THE NUMBER OF FISH...

Awwwright Skunked! Hey, a five pounder is not just a "nice one", that's a great tuc, period. You're having great luck with those live cichlids. You'll be reporting six and seven pounders in no time. Good luck and good fishing.

Yeah, I take my son and nephew three times a year. Lots of fun and usually plenty of action. I don't use anything heavier than 10 lb. test. - my son has landed catfish up to 15 lbs. with it. We don't eat catfish and so we give away our fish at the weigh station. We've had our best luck on salmon bel...

Alright Skunked! Your live cichlids did the trick on those finicky tucs. Nothing like watching tucs attack live bait. You're on a roll. Good luck and good fishing.

I add a small removable split shot to my line about a foot or so above the hook to keep the bait from swimming into cover and hanging up my line. Then I can lob my bait close to the cover. Or I move the split shot to within 6-8 inches of the hook and drop it into sunken treetops, without too much fe...

Modest_Man - Great job on the live bait. Those livebearers are the "medaka" or liberty mollies that a lot of the locals use. I've never seen those green terrors before, but they look like some kind of cichlid. Good for your aquarium. The crayfish are good for the largemouth, but unfortunately those ...

Earthworms?

Modest_Man - In constantly damp areas such as the old Nuuanu Pali Drive, you can pull off the side of the road, grab your rake or a nearby stick, and start turning over the decomposing leaves and debris right alongside the road - earthworms under there. There are rural roads, walking paths, or trail...

Modest_Man - Stan Wright has said that he uses a small #10 AH hook with his live bait. I would agree - you want to use a hook that's small enough so that the live bait acts/swims naturally. Most live baiters either free-line their bait (no weight or bobber), or add a small split shot to sink the bai...

Finally Caught Something!

There may be a solution to your high water woes. As I've mentioned before, I believe that high water and California grass equals good holding cover for tucs. Based on your description, you might want to consider creating your own high-water fishing spot right there behind your dad's house. Get a sic...

Thanks, Stan. I recall asking in my Jan. 29, 2006 post for information about the reported 14 pounder, but I hadn't heard about any 11 pounders. If you spoke directly to the people who caught those bad boys, then that's the first time I've heard someone actually say that they spoke to the anglers who...

Report From The Lake

The water level continues to slowly drop. We released 25 tucs today, five of them rats and the rest in the 2-3 lb. range. The biggest was a hump-head male that weighed 5 lbs. 3 oz. (it seems that this year we must have hooked and released at least five other male tucs at this exact weight). Also rel...

Report From The Lake - Weekend of June 17-18, 1006

The lake is clear and the water level has dropped another foot, with the shoreline grass now about half submerged. Nothing much to report this week as the action was strangely slow. Released 14 tucs between 1 and 4 lbs. as well as two 5 lb. channel cats. Perhaps better luck next week. That's it for ...

Report From The Lake - Weekend of June 3-4, 2006

The water clarity is excellent, the water temperature is warm, and the water level is high. Great conditions for sight fishing and tossing our baits at cruising tucs. My brother-in-law and I released 10 "rats" under 1 lb., 13 between 1 and 2 lbs., 4 between 2 and 3 lbs., 5 between 3 and 4 lbs., one ...
