Helpful

If you know someone who is "stuck" in this behavior, rather than demonize them, help them understand the contradiction. Talk to them. Help them see the truth about the matter. This can be a great realization for a person, and even change someone's outlook on life.

Hi everybody

Oh, yes - Cannot forget the puntat! The bass love to eat puntat! And aquarium enthusiasts will always have something to net and bring home for the tank! Yes, the whopper bluegills! Bend your ultra light trout rod in half! Florida Largemouth = Excellent, yes. These fish grow really fast and will not ...

Make your List of 6 fish if the lake was restocked anew

Here's what I would ask for (I'm going to imagine everyone's list is going to be very similar). 1. Largemouth bass = not trophy lake, numbers lake; therefore, Northern Strain ("football" shape bass). 2. Bluegill (is there anyone out there who would want to live without it?). 3. Tucunare. 4. Tilapia ...

The interest group is clearly on one extreme

Presentations such as "catch nothing, take nothing" are obviously extreme. 1. No fishing licenses to bring in revenue for the State of Hawaii. 2. A marked decline percentage in tourism due to the interest in island angling. 3. The removal of an enormously active (economically) recreational activity....

poaching

poaching is greed.
does one destroy the very thing they are trying to keep? (contradictory behavior)
this is the destructive result of greed.
it's the end of happiness.

yes, the food - and the memories

how about those evenings on the beach in the early 70's. It's a saturday, and the sun is setting on the north shore. the hibachi is glowing. the 9" manini caught by spear are put on. the aweoweo and menpachi are going onto the hibachi too, next to the manini. the shoyu/sesame oil bowl with the small...

worms

The library will have books on how to farm (grow worms). You can order some to start with and start growing them in your compost box (you'll need to build a compost box). Then you can compost a small portion of your yard and transfer some into the dirt of your yard - they will begin to multiply (wor...

access to jumping tucunare

you may think of trying a very small float tube. wear the regular snorkeling fins (the ones with the full heel). but don't go in without wearing full waterproof pants - the water can cause serious skin illness. you can order one from Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas through the mail for well under $100. Ac...

frogs

The little dark bodied ones are the ones i remember most. They hatch right out of the ground (out of the dirt) during a certain time of the year. i think the eggs are laid under the ground in places near the river. But it's the larger green one that is what the bass eat. Try tossing the Bill Dance S...

So true, Stan....Have you all ever wondered what it might be like if the reservoir was filled to an absolute maximum? Like, perhaps, practically up to the underside of the bridge? Here's another tantalizing Q: How high, at the most, did it ever actually GET? (Is there a way to find that out?). What ...

high water and stuff

The high water allows those tucs to spread out and roam. They aren't sedentary like largemouth bass - they swim around and travel. Perhaps they don't get "turned off"; they're just more spread out and harder to find. The low water concentrates them into reduced environments, and are then easy to fin...

before going to kayak and canoe, used to paddle, back in the good ol' days, like a hawaiian canoe, a cheap inflatable (two guys). i remember it being 8 feet i think. cheap vinyl one. bought it at the old Wahaiwa Coronet store. we used to paddle that thing for four hours straight, to get far up the n...

the livebait puntat

we used to catch the puntat by using handheld scoopnets (the old kind with the wood handle and the red netting). we paddled the inflatable up the north fork and scooped under logs and rocks, and in the fallen leaves along the shore bank's edge - staying in shallow water. Back in those days, far up t...
