Stan, I have lots of weekdays off and I crush down the barb on all my hooks. :D
For the potluck, I make a mean chocolate chip cookie and a pretty fair chicken enchilada.

Tenkara: 1st impressions

So I decided to jump on the bandwagon and get a tenkara rod. Being a penniless public servant and all around cheap guy, I went with the least expensive one out there, the Fountainhead caddis fly 330. It's 11' and rated 5:5 which has something to do with the flex. I just liked the $45 price tag. ($53...

Ok, I just ordered the Fountainhead Caddis 11' 5:5. I'll post a review after I have a chance to test it out. As you mentioned Stan, side by side comparison would be very valuable. In the name of science, of course.

One more option: Fountainhead tenkara tenkaraflyfish.webs.com/tenkararods.htm

tenkarabum describes them as better than the all fishing buy rods but still not as nice as TenkaraUSA. But they have an entry level model for just $45. Seriously thinking about buying one.

Hi Marcus. I take my kids fishing in the UH pond sometimes. We've caught a bunch of different cichlid species (convict, jewel banded, midas, and jaguar) and I hooked and lost a koi. I haven't seen any pacu so I can't say for sure if there are still any in there. I'm not sure if it's officially OK, b...

Fishtricity, there are a number of streams on the island with well established populations of smallmouth bass. Bad for native stream fish but good for someone needing a River Runs Through It fix. Trout gear, some small woolly buggers or clousers, and the ability to cast far enough to clear the leade...

No, I think the one I found has been in the drink for a while. That one is a beauty though.

Found:Lure getter backer

I found a lure retrieval device in the lake today. Is it yours? If so, PM me a specific description and I'll figure out a way to get it back to you. Ironic, yeah?

I agree, Stan. It wasn't them getting beat up in it itself, more the idea that Hawaii bonefish are especially tough to fool. It gave me hope that if I get a chance to go after bones somewhere else, I'll maybe catch more than one a year. Did Mike and crew come and shoot a Lake Wilson episode while th...

Familiar Waters

Just watched an episode of Outdoor Channel's fly fishing show "Familiar Waters" filmed here on Oahu. Host Mike was after oio, first with Sawyer from Lost then on his own. While he didn't get skunked, he did get more or less beat down. I know it's wrong and bachi to get pleasure from another person's...

Double digits

Had my first double digit day on the lake today. All tucs, all on flies. I think the grand total was 12 which I know many of you would call a slow day but it was more than 2x my previous best. OK, now the full disclosure part: all but 3 of those fish were pretty little, mostly 8-12". The 3 respectab...

Fly rod first

The lake was doing a pretty good "cruel mistress" routine on me when I went out Tuesday morning. First I couldn't find fish, then all the (few) tucs I hooked got off, then fish finally started busting on the surface when it was time to go. But like any self respecting cruel mistress, she gave up jus...

It's all relative

Had a kinda slow but far from bad day on the lake today. At about 8:45, I put the yak in at my usual spot across from Boy Scout Island (Boy Scout Point?) and set my timer for 20 minutes. I had promised myself I would paddle north for that amount of time or until I reached water that was new to me. I...
